I’m taking part in January Joy, a blogging challenge started by Rebecca from Florence Finds. It’s easy to take part, just write blog posts on as many/few of the prompts that take your fancy!
In the past 18 months or so, I’ve really enjoyed improving my fitness, through swimming and walking. We also walked most of the Great Glen Way last year which was our first walking holiday, but we both enjoyed it immensely. When I was working full time, I generally swam 3 or 4 times per week before work, and I’m intending to continue this now that I’m working 3 days per week though it’ll be nice to have a day each week when I don’t have to get up early to do a pre-work swim. I generally swim for half an hour before work and can swim a kilometre comfortably (40 lengths) in this time.
Fridays are also our designated day off for Mr B and I, so we’ll be taking the dog on a good long walk.
So, with that in mind, since returning to work, I’ve been counting the number of kilometres travelled, covered by swimming, walking and using the cardio machines in the gym. I’m including walking to and from work (which is up to 21km/12 miles per week if I walked to and from work for each of my working days). In January I’m going to aim to cover 90km (which is 55 miles) – I think this is an achievable challenge for me, which can be built on in the year. Obviously a combination of healthy eating with regular exercise is brilliant, so I’ll be also trying to reduce my calories sensibly, and trying to eat less processed foods.
In my first week, I did the following:
- 05/01 – 3.5km walk and 0.8km swim
- 06/01 – 1.35km swim and 2.75km walk
- 07/01 – 7km walk
- 09/01 – 7km walk
so my total distance travelled this week is 22.4 kilometres (13 miles)!
I’ve got three weeks left in January so my 90km target is achievable as long as I keep up this level of activity. Next week I hope to swim three or four times, cycle at the gym and keep up the walking. I’ll keep you updated at the end of the month as to whether I made my target!
