Orkney – West Mainland Explorations

October 3, 2019 by Susan Barrie Leave a Comment

At the end of August, my brother and I had an overnight trip to Orkney. With just over 30 hours on the mainland, we had to strike a balance of touring some key tourist sites without tearing round like maniacs, and we started off with an afternoon on the west mainland.

Orkney Food and Drink: Orkney Buffalo

December 5, 2016 by Susan Leave a Comment

This week I have a special mini-series of posts,  sharing my visits to local Orkney food and drink producers. This is out of a growing interest I have to discover more about the provenance of our food, particularly in the Scottish Highlands and Islands where the natural larder of ingredients are commonly used. I’ve been…

Happy St Andrew’s Day! Our Let’s Bake Inverness gathering this week had a patriotic theme to celebrate. Considering I had spent two weeks in Orkney I had decided quite early on to use Orkney beremeal from Barony Mill in Birsay to make some Orkney Cheddar and Beremeal Scones! Don’t know much about the patron saint…

Continuing on from Tuesday’s post, I thought I would continue on with some more photos of our outdoor Orkney escapades. We spent a lot of time walking, mostly on sandy beaches, windbeaten coastal paths, or in the quaint small towns of Stromness and Kirkwall. (While I remember, our self-catering apartments deserve a shout-out – see…
