ABM DSLR Basics Course – (1) Focus

May 9, 2015 by Susan Leave a Comment

I’ve finally got round to starting a course which will help me learn more about how to operate those manual settings on my DSLR Camera.  I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to start, but hopefully with the longer days ahead of us I can have a good run at the course over the summer.

One of my Christmas presents, this course is from A Beautiful Mess which is probably one of the most widely read design and lifestyle blogs in the world. It’s a self paced class with ‘homework’ assignments that are designed to work through some of the technical lessons that you need to know when working with a DSLR. However the ‘homework’ isn’t as scary as it sounds, as you can just Instagram any shots that you are proud of, tagging @abeautifulmessofficial.

Armed with both the iPad which I had the course lessons loaded up onto, the cheat sheets, and of course my camera and it’s manual, I started to play around with the manual settings. I was concentrating on focus points today and it took me a little while to work out what was going on, I got some nice shots of my patient pooch Bartie. He’s got an expressive face, can you take a guess at what he might be thinking? He doesn’t look too impressed in the first shot!

I like this shot particularly as our neighbours door sits quite nicely in the background. My next lesson is composition, and I’m hoping that I will be able to incorporate what I’ve learnt about focus points into the next set of homework tasks!
