January Joy #2 – Health and Fitness Goals update 1

January 23, 2015 by Susan Leave a Comment

Last week I blogged about a new health and fitness goal I’ve got in January – to travel 90km on foot.by swimming. It’s all part of #januaryjoy – a blogging challenge run by Rebecca of Florence Finds.

Last week was a bit of a toughie. We got tons of snow (like 7 inches as we live quite a way up from sea level!) and ice which makes it a bit harder to walk to work, and get down to the pool for a pre work swim. We were really lazy in walking the dog too, though he did love running up and down our snowy garden chasing after his beloved ball.  I did however go to the gym a couple of times on workdays. I’ve just realised that I don’t really like the gym as it feels like I’m not actually going anywhere when on a stationary bike or treadmill, and I really missed the routine of going to the pool! For the sake of being honest, here’s my count up of kilometres travelled last week:

  • 12/01 – 6km in the gym
  • 13/01  -4km in the gym
  • 16/01 – 0.8km swim, 2.2km walk
  • 17/01 – 4km walk

Total: 18km

The total is a little bit less than the first week back to work, but I’m on course this week to get back on track with the distance as it’s been easier to walk to work without the fear of slipping on ice,  and I’ve had a swimming buddy too which has been an instant motivator! The other thing I’ve noticed a bit more is the lighter mornings and evenings already, which is so nice. When going for a pre-work swim in December it was soul destroying to leave the pool at 8:45 in the darkness (the joys of 9am sunrises in winter) but already there’s signs that the light is returning (the picture below was taken at 8.30am this week!)
