Caithness is full of talented makers, crafters and artists. It’s also home to the very special Dunnet Bay Distillery (see here for my tasting/tour review), home of Rock Rose Gin. Their cosy and welcoming tasting room is home to their debut art exhibition, which features work by twenty-nine artists who were ‘Inspired by Gin’. We visited just before Christmas and it was just the tonic (ahem) for a winters day!
The artwork on display in this exhibition has been created for ‘Inspired by Gin’ by local artists from Caithness, who include Joanne B. Kaar, Hannah Cambridge, Lisa Poulsen, Debbie Lee, Liz O’ Donnell, Helen Moore, Lisa Weller and Lindsey Gallacher, alongside artists from the North Highlands including Sue Jane Taylor and Ian Westacott.
Work in the exhibition also comes from further afield in Scotland such as art created by Richard Demarco, and Ian Hamilton Finlay, and even from across the Scottish/English border.
The artwork on display in the exhibition includes paintings, textiles, glass, wood and much more. All of the artwork featured in the exhibition has been inspired by and is connected to the theme of ‘Inspired by Gin’. This theme has been interpreted in a variety of different ways from the botanicals used to make Rock Rose Gin, to the landscape of Caithness or the history of gin. Most of the work on display in the exhibition is for sale.
Claire Murray, Co-Founder of Dunnet Bay Distillers, says, “We have long celebrated our local heritage and provenance through the spirits we create and have also put the spotlight on local artists through our Creative Collection Series. Hosting an ‘Inspired by Gin’ exhibition felt like a natural next step for us and one we hope will prove very popular with our visitors, both from Caithness and the Highlands and those who pass through Dunnet on the North Coast 500”.
The ‘Inspired by Gin’ exhibition is open to the public from 6th December 2019 until 28th March 2020, Monday to Friday 10am until 5pm. Special Talks by local artists featured in the exhibition will take place at Dunnet Bay Distillery on 30th January and 20th February from 7-9pm – more details can be found on the Rock Rose Gin Facebook page.
