Local Lunch: North Kessock Hotel

August 11, 2016 by Susan Leave a Comment

Back in July, I wish we could say that we had sunny days, but unfortunately we had a couple of weeks of torrential rain when we returned from our dutch travels. It was the sort of day that we didn’t want to venture far from Inverness, but we did want to try somewhere new for lunch. A friend recommended the North Kessock Hotel and we took ourselves off on a short 15 minute drive north, across the Kessock bridge. What looks like a old stone, whitewashed building on the outside, houses a modern dining room with views out onto the firth, which was surprisingly busy on a Friday lunchtime.

While I enjoyed a rich and creamy mushroom soup (that did taste more mushroomy than creamy, which was appreciated), Mr B had pan fried scallops accompanied with a crab and apple salad. It looked a beautiful dish and the scallops were so tasty!

I had a chicken burger for my main course – a butterflied chicken breast marinaded in lemon and coriander then lightly crumbed. It came with a side salad, salsa and guacamole, and chips which I didn’t finish. The guac and salsa went really well with the chicken, but I would have preferred some homemade guacamole (I have an inkling it was shop bought as it was very smooth).

Mr B was well and truly raving about his tagliatelle and home made meatballs – seasoned well and with a heaping portion of rich tomato pasta goodness.

Unusually Mr B tempted me into getting a dessert (It’s normally the other way around as I usually skip a starter and order dessert) – I had a slab of white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake, and Mr B selected the ‘Chocolate Nemesis’ – a very rich chocolate tart which was almost ganache like throughout which came with two shortbread rounds. Mr B was raving about the shortbread – he’s quite fussy about shortbread so it must have been really really good!

The service was relaxed and this is somewhere we’d love to return to for an evening meal. The menu is varied with options to suit every kind of appetite!
