Local Lunch: Phoenix Ale House

April 1, 2015 by Susan Leave a Comment

On Saturday we enjoyed a mooch around the shops in Inverness and we fancied something hearty for lunch. Mr B had already visited the Pheonix Ale House before, so suggested there as a stop off.

The Phoenix Ale House is at one end of Academy Street, which is the main traffic thoroughfare through the city. I’ve read recently that it is up for sale, which is a shame as it’s a fab little pub with great food – so I hope that any new proprietor has a passion for real ales and keeping it a classy place. That paragraph obviously tells you that we had a good lunch there!

There’s a separate large room for people allowing all group sizes to enjoy a meal, and the decor is bright and eye catching without being too in your face.

We were told when we sat down of a few items that were off the menu –  a mark of good service as it’s always disappointing to be told of unavailable dishes after you’ve perused the menu!

Being ever predictable, we both chose burgers. Venison and red onion marmalade for me, beef and bourbon jam (with some cheddar) for Mr B. Both burgers came with a stack of potato wedges and some coleslaw.

Both the burgers were excellent -clearly homemade and we both loved the accompanying relish with each burger which really complemented it. The potato wedges were also homemade – the skins were crisp and flavoured with spice and salt. The potato inside was so soft – definitely one of the best sides I’ve had with a meal in a long time. The slaw was also good and crisp, but with a tad too much mayo for my liking.

2 burgers and 2 soft drinks came to £24, great value as we didn’t need to eat much for the rest of the day! This is definitely the best place for burgers that we’ve found in Inverness to date, and even rivals the Allangrange Arms on the Black Isle.

[…] Go for the milkshakes as they really are good,  but I’d rather get a burger from the Phoenix Ale House or the Allangrange […]
