Yesterday the Mr and I walked up Craig Phadrig (pronounced Craig Fad-Rig) to meet the Picts! Our house and garden backs into the hill – we have a gate that goes straight into the forest which is very convenient! It’s a popular place with any of our friends that come to visit as the view from the top is absolutely stunning on a good day – with views looking right out onto Ben Wyvis and other hills in that area.
The Picts were the native tribes of Scotland who ruled the Highlands and East of Scotland between the 3rd and 9th centuries AD. In places the short walk up the hill to the top is quite steep, but when you finally get to the top you are rewarded with the fact that you:
a) have a great view from the top
b) have the knowledge that you are standing on the remains of an ancient Pictish fort!
The event was organised Forestry Commission Scotland and included some brief talks/Q&A sessions, the performance of musical instruments used at the time, storytelling, and the showing of weapons and Pictish symbols. The event is also part of the Highland Archaeology Festival which runs through September and October – I’m hoping to get along to one or two other events coming up!
