Last week Mr B and I took ourselves off to the Kingsmills Hotel for a spa day. Our local gym had run an incentive programme earlier in the year which I had successfully completed, so my incentive of a 50% discount voucher to use at the Kingsmills Spa was earned!
We (Mr B got in on the spa action too!) booked in for the Duo package, which involved two hours of treatments (body wrap, facial and massage) each, a champagne three course lunch and then use of the leisure facilities at the Health Club in the afternoon.
Our treatments were so good – we were truly pampered with some lovely Comfort Zone products and we were so relaxed (I might have even fallen asleep…!).
Onto our lunch – we were in the main spa building for this, where there are also accommodation suites available. There was an area next to the main reception where breakfast is served which is where we ate our lunch. We were the only people having lunch there which felt a little weird as there were various tradespeople walking through the area, so we would have liked to have been in the main restaurant in the main building, but the dining area was nice enough, I liked the thistle feature wall!
We weren’t expecting to be impressed by the lunch as we had already had to make our choice of main course (salads) and dessert, but we were pleasantly surprised. Of course we were happy when firstly the champagne came along!
A basket of freshly baked rolls accompanied our vegetable broth soup starter, which was a large portion of soup. As breakfast was a long time ago by now, we tucked in – the soup was well seasoned and I enjoyed the addition of the soft pearl barley.
Onto our main courses. We had both chosen the salmon salad over the chicken caeser and vegetarian (goats cheese and mushroom) options. We weren’t expecting to get such a big portion!
The fresh salad was simply dressed, and the potatoes warm and slightly buttered, upon which a beautifully delicate fillet of salmon rested. We also got a separate pot of sour cream dressing but we didn’t need it. We were really pleased with this – we didn’t think that we would get such a big fillet of salmon and it was cooked to perfection.
To finish, we had both opted for the strawberry tart. I was expecting that it might be a dainty thing to finish the meal… oh no!
It was HUGE! There were tons of strawberries on the tart, IN the tart, as well as on the plate, along with a strawberry coulis which worked really well to flavour the whipped cream. The pastry tart was almost a thin biscuit texture and looked like wholemeal flour had been used to give it a more earthy flavour (that’s just our guessing!). So delicious and a pleasant surprise to end a pleasantly surprising meal!
We finished off our day at the Kingsmills by reading by the pool to recover from such a lovely lunch, followed by a dip in the pool, jacuzzi and steam room. Total bliss, even for me who normally can’t sit still for more than 10 minutes!
