Last weekend saw me take the train down to Kingussie for the annual Food on Film Festival! I would have loved to have taken advantage of more of the festival programme, but other commitments in the diary meant that I had just enough time to attend the food hall held all day Saturday.
It was a beautiful day and the 50 minute train journey was magical – snow all the way right down from the just hills outside of Inverness all the way down to Kingussie.
The Food on Film runs over the first weekend of February, and features some evening film showings (often accompanied by some themed food). The Saturday food hall features lots of stalls for artisan food producers, some demos and lots of opportunities for tasters. It’s a lot like the Highland and Moray Food and Drink festival that I went to at the end of 2014.
I arrived and decided to have a wander around the stalls to scope out what foodie delights I might be tempted by.
However by the time I had wandered round the stalls and had a chat with a few of the businesses, it was time to grab some lunch before the demos bagan. I partook in some delicious chorizo stew soup and an onion & herb scone (for the bargainous price of £1.50 – provided by the local church stall) and enjoyed that while watching the demo from Charlotte Flower Chocolates who made two chocolate ganache tarts.
I then returned to considering what to purchase. Some goodies had really taken my fancy and I had enjoyed some tasters so I had a rough idea what to buy. My money didn’t unfortunately stretch to everything I wanted to buy, so I went for new goodies that I hadn’t tried before (with an exception for some of Capability Brown’s baked goods – which were half eaten on the train home, with the other half saved for Mr B!).
I stuck around for a couple of other demos but the other activities lined up in the afternoon weren’t to my taste, so I took an early exit back to Inverness with my wee haul of goodies.
Here’s what I bought:
This chutney and biscuits combo proved delicious from Auld Alliance, so I couldn’t resist picking up some for ourselves!
More chutneys and oatcakes this time, from Chillilicious
Elderflower infused white chocolate from Charlotte Flower Chocolates.
A wee pork pie from local Kingussie butchers – George Gow
Maasdammer cheese from the Cheese House, Cromarty
Nori nachos and Moroccan Spice Veggie dip (wf, gf, raw, vegan) from Good Food Good feelings
