Jubilee weekend

June 5, 2012 by Susan Leave a Comment

Just a quick post featuring some pictures and links from things I’ve enjoyed this weekend… (although I was working yesterday, so not the 4 day weekend that most people I know were able to enjoy!)

– Doing a stint at the Meadows Fair stall for Lead Scotland (the charity I work for in Edinburgh) on Saturday. Despite the cold and windy weather, we had a great time selling stuff to raise money. I purchased a couple of items – a really cool vintage box and also a teacup set. AND I’ve managed to pack the tea set into the box, result! And we met with Mr B’s #1 Best Man (as opposed to his other best man, the best BEST man) for wanders around Edinburgh and a trip to Wagamama’s. THEN  followed by an evening at the Adam Smith Theatre for a Roddy Woomble (of Idlewild) gig.

– Jubilee celebrations. I’ve had major London withdrawal symptoms this weekend seeing all the Jubilee coverage. I thought the concert was fantastic – I used to work just round the corner from Buckingham Palace so it was quite weird seeing so many many people pack out the space that I used to walk with my lunch buddy Donna. I was in awe of Grace Jones and her awesome hula-hooping ability! We also had a lovely Jubilee tea for two in front of the TV, and watched the Kings Speech.

-Days like today where I’ve been able to sleep in, transfer myself to the sofa to watch more Jubilee goings on for a couple of hours, make a delish sweet potato, spinach and courgette salad for lunch, go for a swim and do some shopping, head to the Bonnybank Inn for a lovely Mexican dinner, head home and play some scrabble with Mr B during a rainy evening. Thanks HRH for an extra bank holiday!

A Peedie Stroll around Stromness | Ring of Brodgar’s Prehistoric Past

Stromness is mainland Orkney’s second largest town, and after our west mainland explorations of Skara Brae, Yesnaby and the Orkney Brewery, we headed there to soak up some of the sunshine that had appeared! Stromness Harbour is a bustling place, with the huge Northlink ferry towering over small fishing boats. There was a visiting tall…

Orkney – West Mainland Explorations

At the end of August, my brother and I had an overnight trip to Orkney. With just over 30 hours on the mainland, we had to strike a balance of touring some key tourist sites without tearing round like maniacs, and we started off with an afternoon on the west mainland.

Latheronwheel Harbour | Off the Beaten Track

I’ve written previously about a trip to Lybster Harbour, which has taken a star turn recently in featuring as a filming location for The Crown. However, the East Coast of Caithness is jam packed with more harbours, and after we visited Laidhay Croft Museum, we chose a beautifully day to visit Latheronwheel Harbour.
