In 2018, I attended my first Taste North festival. The 2019 festival is rapidly approaching early in October, so here’s my preview of what you can expect from the most northerly food festival on the UK mainland!
THE RETURN OF THE TASTE NORTH CHALLENGE
Taste North is inviting entries for its popular annual baking competition, the Taste North Challenge.
Last year’s winners, Annie Mills (pictured below, centre) and Lili MacKenzie were chosen from a record number of entries in what was a tough competition, judged by a panel of local experts and the festival’s 2018 guest of honour, Tony Singh MBE.
This year, contestants need to register their intention to enter one of two categories – the Youth/ Student Category (open to all applicants from 12 to 24 years old) or the Open Category (open to all ages) by completing the registration form on the Venture North web site and returning it by 21st September.
Registered contestants will bring their baked entry along to the Taste North Festival on 6th October 2019 in John O’ Groats, to be judged by an experienced panel including the 2019 festival’s guest of honour, renowned chef, Jean Christophe Novelli.
2019’S GUEST OF HONOUR
Jean Christophe Novelli will also headline the cookery demos at Taste North 2019. These are always popular so make sure you head to the demo tent to get a seat! The day will also feature many foodie and family activities cocktail masterclasses and workshops.
Food, Drink and Craft items from Caithness, Sutherland, Orkney and other parts of the Scottish Highlands will also be available to buy. I certainly came home last year with a full bag of goodies. Check out the full exhibitor list here!
Children are well catered for too, with ceramic painting and slime making activities available from Thurso’s Messy Nessy.
