Another week – another local lunch place to visit! Today I’m letting you in on a nice little place just south of Inverness at Daviot, called The Dairy.
This isn’t a new place to us, but we haven’t been here since it had been taken over by new proprietors, so thought it would be worth a visit to see what had changed!
We had got thoroughly drenched on our walk in the nearby woods, so we were more than ready to be warm and dry again. The Dairy is a very spacious cafe, with a long wide corridor and a round room with plenty of tables. The round room used to have a mixture of dining tables and comfy sofas in front of a wood burning stove – the stove was still there but not on, and the sofas had gone which seemed a shame. The tables were nicely spaced out though – so you never felt that you were eavesdropping any conversation, although I felt some background music wouldn’t have gone amiss. One other change was now that the Dairy operates table service throughout now, which was nice to relax and consult the menus. With that in mind. onto our lunch choices…!
I had a soup and sandwich combo – the soup of the day was roast garlic and celariac, and my sandwich of choice was smoked salmon, cream cheese and cucumber. The soup was tasty and nicely thick – although I was expecting to taste more celeriac, and the bread (made locally) was beautifully soft and I had no complaints about the amount of salmon or cream cheese. The price (£9) was a little on the steep side I felt – for the £2.50 I was charged to add the soup (noting of course that I did choose the most expensive sandwich filling), I would have expected a slightly bigger bowl of soup, or to be charged £1.50.
Considering as well that Mr B chose a burger and fries (which cost £10), I did have considerable food envy! The fries and relish were homemade and the bun was really fresh and soft. That said, it wasn’t well constructed and overfilled with extra salad (which could have been added to the side salad on the plate) and Mr B had to resort to cutting it in half in order to enjoy it. All very minor things though and Mr B still enjoyed it.
After we were thoroughly warmed up, of course on our way out we decided to try some of the local Black Isle Dairy icecream to cool us down! They had twelve exciting flavours on offer including some dairy free sorbets. However, we were both in the mood to try some icecream made from the milk of their Holstein, Friesan and Jersey cows!
MrB chose Rocky Road and Mint Choc Chip, and I chose Rocky Road with Honeycomb. Two massive scoops cost just £2.50 and we’ll be remembering this place in the summer when we can enjoy our choices outside!
I received no incentive for my post and all opinions are our own.
