Aviemore – Foodie Hidden Gems

August 18, 2017 by Susan Leave a Comment

We recently had friends to stay and were delighted to show them some of our favourite spots in the Highlands. One particular day the forecast looked particularly good around Aviemore, so we took ourselves down the A9 and enjoyed the unique setting of both beach and forest at Loch Morlich. Aviemore is always a good shout for us, as it’s only 40 minutes away and there are so many places to explore.

It was so relaxing to wander across the sand, watching others fly kites, canoe across the loch, enjoy picnics or feed the ducks. The pooch was happy to explore too. aviemore aviemore

I love the exposed tree roots that spread over and along the sand, as well as the trees that look as though they shouldn’t be standing any more!

After a while, the wind whipped up and the inevitable rain showers hit so we jumped back in the car and headed to Aviemore. Our usual haunt – The Mountain Café – is shut for a couple of days midweek so  we popped along into Route 7 café which I had heard very positive comments about. I didn’t have high hopes as the Satnav navigated towards the depths of Aviemore Industrial Estate, but this place has hidden gem written all over it. It’s situated on the 1st floor of the Highland Home Centre shop and as you climb the stairs there is this fantastic wall illustration to enjoy while you enjoy your food or coffee. It’s aptly named as the Route 7 cycle route passes by the café.

The café has an extensive menu with various breakfast options, grilled sandwiches, burgers, soups and salads. Mr B chose a ‘Mac-Attack’ burger and I fancied a ‘Taboon’ grilled sandwich which contained falafel, some wonderful creamy feta and roasted peppers. The rye bread was a treat too.

Just across the road from the café was another business I hadn’t come across before – The Kilted Fudge Company.

We got a box of four flavours to share at home – Millionaire Shortbread, Cookies and Cream, Mint Chocolate and my personal favourite – Clootie Dumpling.
