In recent weeks there hasn’t been too much ‘training’ for the Great Glen Way, as we’ve had various things going on, although we’ve managed to find time to buy our waterproof trousers and footwear. We got Bartie neutered, which hampered getting out and about, as he had a massive cone on his head for 10 days! Then a couple of weekends ago, I was in London. However, last weekend we did manage to do a really nice 7.5 mile route on the south side of Loch Ness. The route chosen was the three loch circuit – mostly flat with a bit of up and down.
We also got our holiday pack through from Mickledore. We’ve used them to book our B&Bs and baggage transfer. All the information from them has been extensive and the quality of the accommodation looks good. We’ve scoped out where we might have our evening meals, and started to look at the route for each day (although the GGW is well signposted, I think it’s going to be hard to get lost!) which is as follows:
Day 1: Fort William to Gairlochy (10 miles)
Day 2: Gairlochy to Laggan (13 miles)
Day 3: Laggan to Fort Augustus (10 miles)
Day 4: Fort Augustus to Invermoriston (8 miles)
Day 5: Invermoriston to Drumnadroichdt (14 miles with more climbs and descents than other days, so we’ll be especially glad to finish with a nice craft beer/g&t at the Benleva Hotel!)
As the eagle-eyed among you will notice, we finish our walk in Drum, not in Inverness where the Great Glen Way finishes up. We didn’t have quite enough annual leave to do the whole walk, but since the path passes near to our house, we will plan to finish the route another time.
