Today I will be giving you some detail on some of the top foodie places we visited on the Isle of Skye.
We arrived at our lovely self-catering apartment during the early evening, and gave ourselves a treat of takeaway pizza. This wasn’t your usual greasy Dominos fare – this was from Cafe Sia’s woodfired ovens in Broadford! We can really recommend these pizzas, they both had delicious thin bases, and were very generous with their toppings. I chose the seafood pizza and Mr B chose pizza with Tallegio and prosciutto. They rivalled pizza that we’ve eaten at Grimaldi’s in Brooklyn!
When we were in Portree we stopped for lunch at Cafe Arriba. You’ll get a filling lunch here; there’s interesting veggie options and good coffee. We shared heaped bowls of creamy macaroni cheese (with bacon and leek) and a spicy bean chilli with drinks for under £20.
A place that we visited a couple of times was The Oyster Shed. This was a brilliant find, selling locally caught fish and seafood, game and other produce. We both bought items to take home and cook for our evening meals (scallops, venison mince for meatballs) as well as fresh seafood to eat on the premises. Mr B tried a couple of oysters (farmed very locally in Talisker Bay) and I had a delicious crab roll. I did get serious food envy when I saw the quality of the local seafood platters but Mr B did a sterling job on pan frying the scallops for our tea!
Onto a cafe that I wish we had time to return to for lunch as the platters looked full of delicious fare, but it was only for coffee and a late breakfast that we had time for at the Red Roof Cafe, near Dunvegan. It was everything you could possibly want from a cafe – picturesque setting, great (Mr B’s favourite) coffee from a number of locations, a big range of lunch and baking options, gentle music playing in the background, and beautiful landscape art on the walls. Can you tell we liked it?!
Next up – a couple of places on the North-east side of Skye. Homely Ellishadder Art Cafe gets a mention for super-light scones (and extra points in my book for providing lemon curd as a jam alternative).
A great lunch stop off (or somewhere to load up if you are out on a walk!) is Skye Pie Cafe. The below is a mutton, harissa and apricot pie with some smoky, hot beans. It’s also jam-packed with instagram worthy photo opportunities…
